What they are saying about Maari Teetri…
Reports have come in that the Maari Teetri promo is now on air. It might take a couple of days before it catches on across most channels. Meanwhile, let’s summarise on what music critics - professional, amateur as well as bloggers have been saying about Raja Hasan’s Maari Teetri. You might have read these before - but I am just summarizing them in one place.
Joginder Tuteja from IndiaFM says:
“A potential success in the making, ‘Maari Teetri’ is rendered by Raja Hasan who was the 1st runner up on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge (2007). With a rustic folk feel to the song that has been fused with Western arrangements, ‘Maari Teetri’ has a catchy tune and in fact comes quite close to ‘Dil Haara’ [Tashan] in terms of feel, mood and setting. The song moves at a frantic pace and can be a highlight of the film if picturised and promoted well since Raja Hasan pretty much justifies his presence in the track.”
Satyajit from the Bollywood Trade News Network uses the typical music critic lingo by using phrases that sound good, but make little sense to the average reader:
“Vishal Shekhar show their benevolence by experimenting out Raja Hasan, runner-up in SAREGAMA (2007) in rendering out Rajasthani folksy track “Maari Teetri” with backdrop of topsy-turvy funky electronic music. Vishal Dadlani’s simplistically penned wording camouflages well with folksy wording in delivering meaningful substance to the track. Raja Hasan’s folksy baritone’s suits the occasion but still it fails to deliver catchy flamboyance in its thumping rhythmical patterns.”
Savio Zacharia from IndiaGlitz.com feels:
“Raja Hasan, the 1st runner up on the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge makes his mark with one of the finest tracks of the album. ‘Maari Teetri’ brings in the pumping Rajasthani folksy beats and is indeed foot tapping. Raja’s voice further enhances Vishal-Shekar’s composition. The track is sure to set the movie sailing across.”
NaachGaana.com has yet another amateur reviewer like us, who writes:
Maari Teethri - What the hell does that mean…”Maari Teethri”…oh well whatever. The song starts off as a club type of song with some rajhastani beats going on. And then Vishal comes into the song with a voice over…talking about some butterfly…not bad…I kinda liked his voice over part hahahahaha. For a second you kind of feel that this song is crossover between Dil Haara and Tashan Mein. Raja Hassan who came in second place in Saregamapa Challenge last year sang this song. He does a splendid job…his voice has range…He’s sounds great when his voice reaches high notes. One thing he has to work on his clarity when it comes to the words he’s singing. Overall, this song is not bad…you can shake your head to this tune.
Daliya Daspurkayastha at BollywoodMantra.com says:
Sa Re Ga Ma Pa runner up, Raja Hasan rendered his voice to the song and his voice is best suited to it as he is popularly known for singing folk songs. He is the right choice of the director and Raja on his part has done full justice to this Rajasthani folk. His work is commendable and simultaneously, he deserves huge round of applause.
Stacey Yount at BollySpice.com goes gaga over the butterflies:
Another track that is just vocally and musically outstanding is Maari Teetri- The Butterfly Song. Raja Hasan lends his voice to the track that gets you groovin’ from the first few lines. Overall it is a fast paced dance track, and with it’s Indian flavored beats it certainly gets your head swaying and your feet tapping and they never stop. If you read the lyric stanza ‘My Butterfly Your My Butterfly So spread your magic wings and fly” before you heard the song, you probably would think uh-huh, but once you hear that stanza you will say, whoa! Raja’s voice is smooth with a swooping quality that you almost feel as if you are the butterfly soaring. (At least I did) They hit the nail on the head with this one!
And finally let’s see what Karthik at itwofs.com has to say. Karthik has been my favourite music reviewer for quite a while now - his 100 word reviews are concise, precise and make a lot of sense. However, when he wrote his De Taali review, he wasn’t too enthusiastic about the Maari Teetri composition, though he wasn’t critical about Raja:
“Maari teetri, despite Raja Hasan’s vocals and a massy rhythm, is terribly clichéd.”
Ten days later, however, when Karthik compiled the 10 best tracks for April and May, he had sportingly revised his opinion and made it a point to mention Maari Teetri:
“Vishal and Shekhar are on a roll. After Tashan, they rock in De taali too. The title songs are groovy and I’ve grown to like Maari teetri too, after the initial aversion. Between the sedate, very stylish Tooti phooti and the very tuneful Aaj main boond hoon, the latter is my fave!”
