Aah, the good old days!

A friend of mine reminded me a few days ago - it’s a bit strange that nowadays - people go out to have dinner and stay back at home to watch a movie.

Changing times! And not much we can do about it. As we move up the lifestyle ladder, social ladder or economic ladder - whatever you prefer to call it, our habits keep changing. And then you look back at the old days and remark - aah those were the good old days.

green-village-resortsThe Raja Hasan interview on Zee Next reminded me of the same. For Raja, it has been almost an overnight change. Those days when he spent traveling miles across Mumbai on foot, spending some wonderful moments with his friends - in spite of the fact that money was hard to come by, things would have been absolute fun. I am not sure, but given a choice of a carefree life and a life where you are in public glare 24×7, the former would be a lot more enjoyable.

Most of us (if you are old enough as me), would have those good-old days memories, just as Raja has. Those days were absolutely wonderful, even if it were a struggle. My first job was less than $40 a month - but those were the best days of my life. The days were very similar to what Raja describes. The creative excuses one needed to make up for managing a short-time-udhaar. Collecting change to get that half-cuppa tea and garam pakoras during a wet monsoon day. Getting to office on foot and “lifts” because you have run out of money for petrol for your scooter. And the days of fighting through serpentine queues to get tickets of the latest movie on a Friday. Compare that with getting your tickets today by online booking with your credit card - how boring.

For some reason, the better days of life, are always in the past. Mmao, the grand young lady of this site, loves going on such nostalgic trips so often. So would many others visiting this site. And it is no surprise that Raja enjoyed those days too. Those struggling days in Mumbai would have been a lot more fun for him - compared to a hectic schedule where you don’t remember in which city you have woken up in. Raja would be a lot more financially secure now, have a bright career going for him, and have a huge number of fans. But nothing can compensate those good old days.

So If you are young and having fun, enjoy life to the fullest. Have fun and think of these days as the best days of your life. A few years down the line, you’ll probably realize that we can’t reverse the clock.

  1. thanks Manish. as usual a most wonderful heartfelt, straight-from-the-heart write-up and one that I fully find myself in!!!!

well incidentally today I took off on a nostalgic trip too with my father’s driver Bishen since he drove me to a meeting as I have a severe backache and frozen left shoulder etc and didnt feel up to driving. a very very rare event this, of being chauffeur driven!!!! haha.

But I went back to my childhood days I remember and spoke about the simple pleasures one sought out in life those days, such as waiting for Thursdays and come thursday, literally standing on the street waiting for my father who would inevitably come back with a very small packet of badaam halwa south indian style for me, weeping my hear out when I came first in contact and that too late at night when shops were shut with the first very doll whose eyes shut when she was laid down that a distant cousin had brought back all the way from the US and waking up the next morning to see my very own doll lying down on bed right next to me eyes tightly shut!!! (my father had got a shop open for me his little princess!!!). Well the poor doll, I named her Rosie because of her rosy cheeks and the poor darling had to go through oil baths, many changes of dresses that I would stitch for her etc etc get hair washed with shikakai well what else would you expect from a typical tamil brahmin girl that I was then!!!! and bla bla bla. all this the poor driver had to listen to!!!!
Yes Manish those were the best days of my life tralalalala.

    A BIG THANKS!!!!

    Love,
    Padma
