This is Karma…

perth-cricketSorry, but I can’t resist the temptation of bringing cricket into this blog. And it has to do with what was arguably India’s finest cricket victories in years. The importance of India’s victory in Perth against Australia today lies in the fact that it was more than just another game of cricket.

For those not in touch with cricket, let me do a quick recap. Earlier this month, India played Australia in Sydney - which saw the uncouthness of the Australians in full flow. They were nothing short of cheats - when they claimed doubtful catches and refused to walk when they were out. They were at their worst behaviour - and to rub it in put in a false charge of racism against Harbhajan Singh. And to top it, the umpires and match referees were possibly on the payroll of the Australians - as they gave every possible decision against the Indians. The Indians lost the match, where they should have deserved a draw - thanks to the manipulative ways of the Australians and the officials involved.

A less resilient side would have been broken by the sting of events that went against them. But this wasn’t just another team. This week they played in Perth - which was supposed to be a place where Australians simply can’t lose. And they went on to beat Australia in a convincing manner. It was more than a winning just another cricket match. It was a victory of fairness and playing the game in the spirit it should be played in. It was a victory against manipulation and cheating. And for the Australians who have their pride seriously dented - it was Karma.

It surely is what many call as Karma - the short-hand for the idea that every action you take causes a reaction in the future. Positive, caring actions will bring positive results back to you, whereas negative, hurtful actions will result in your suffering.

And this reminds me of similar events on the fateful day of October 13, 2007 - when Zee, master manipulators and outright cheats simply forged Saregamapa voting results to keep Raja Hasan away from the crown. Ashish Kaul, the fixer, whose brainwave was to rig the results now has the face the Karma coming back to him. His biggest brainwave - the Indian Cricket League, where Zee put in millions has been a huge-huge flop and has put Zee in a serious financial mess. Saregamapa Lil Champs simply has plummeted in TRP ratings. And they struggle to even launch a new channel called Zee Next - which has no takers.

But what about Raja Hasan? Good Karma has returned to him. He has a string of good singing offers. His stage performances evoked greater response than the person who dubiously crowned the champ. And his fan base has kept growing. And this perhaps time to revisit what Vishal and Shekhar continuously reminded us - that winning in life was more important.

Is there a moral here? I don’t know. But cheats and manipulators can win you a match, a competition. But in the longer run, your wrong deeds will come back to haunt you. This is Karma.

Thanks for the recap as I don’t follow cricket much…
I do come to know what is happening in the world of cricket through my colleagues at work….
As you correctly said One Reaps What One Sows.. Raja has put in lots and lots of hard work… he will no doubt succeed in reaping its benefit.

  3. Hats off! This is truly a wonderful article….
    Amazing… I am left speechless….

  4. You are so correct !!! One will be haunted by your karma. Our Raja will be crowned the winner in life

  5. you are absolutely right….
Righteousness always scores over wrong karma…and thats why RAJA is so very popular today despite being a runner-up in SAREGAMAPA…
he will go a long way I am sure with his soulful voice and good deeds…

  6. Very well said RHB I too believe Karma is followed by every person. When come to Harbhajan Singh case I think all were aware that it was a fault statement made by Ricky Pontin. I too couldn’t tolerate it. They say Cricket is Gentleman’s sport but doubt, when come to Muralitharan case also same thing happen. Australians always behave like they are the genius. Strong person always win only for short term but talented person always have long way any person can’t win their own faith by doing faults. Great example is RAJA’s case now RAJA is having stable position than others really talented person always win their life and their own heart.

  10. Hey! After reading your article- I couldn’t resist pointing out that I was at Perth this last week, watching India trash Australia into the dust and I swear it was the most exciting and the sweetest victory ever. Nothing beats the feeling of watching India win so convincingly in a place where the spectators were 95% Aussie and yet the sounds of “Jeetega bhai jeetega, India jeetega!” and “Bharat Mata ki Jai!” rang out louder than “Aussie Aussie Aussie, oy oy oy!”.

One of the most memorable holidays I’ve ever had.
