Vroom, Vroom Goes The Raja

Just a day ago, I was full of gentle adjectives for Raja Hasan. I wondered if it was really right on his part to so effortlessly play around with our emotions. The Raja-ki-deewani girls toli thought that this delicate Raja was perhaps a modern-day Krishna-avtaar. Just as I was wondering if listening to his ghazals was like enjoying a smooth ride in a Rolls Royce, Raja Hasan went beserk on Saregamapa.

Raja Hasan got into a powerful Michael Schumacher Formula One Ferrari car, got in gear and drove like a maniac on stage and made Himesh Reshammiya and his team look like an autorickshaw that had just run out of adulterated petrol. The autowallah, simply ran out of breath, and for a moment, words.

 

What made Raja Hasan to go into one those acid trips? Why did he go for the power-packed rocking performance, risking singing notes? The answer is clever, careful planning by Vishal-Shekhar.

All these weeks when Himesh Autowallah kept sputtering, VS remained calm, dignified and occasionally standing up to defend Raja. They played the waiting game. And when the autowallah went into reserve with his fuel, VS picked the moment.

They knew with the Om Shanti Om team around, there would be an extended viewership. And luckily the cricket match was rained out at a critical moment. VS knew that fans had already made up their minds on whom to vote - and there was very little one could do to make people “shift” camps. It doesn’t happen. It was the moment to target non-regular viewers of Saregamapa, the non-regular-voters and the fence-sitters.

And they decided to go through by capturing the young audience mindspace. By putting in such a high-energy performance, they were risking the occasional drift in notes. But this hardly matters for viewers. Raja Hasan went ahead and set the stage alight.

Watch carefully, and it was a Raja we never knew (yet again). VS made sure that it was a performance sung to a live band instead of the usual tracks. And I can assure you - there have must been so many rehearsals going into the Chhaiya Chhaiya song - just to get the feel right. And of course it was all Vishal’s choreography. He made the man move, head-bang, shriek, go on high notes, jump, sing in a dual voice and showed him precisely how to use those curly locks of his for effect. There was also a small bit when Raja flipped the mike in his hands, just as Rajnikant would have done with his cigarette. All this while he kept his notes as intact as possible.

Were Team VSR (Vishal-Shekhar-Raja) right in going for performance versus singing? Surely, because it has made a big impact. And moreover they had the Dard-e-Disco as the backup song for singing abilities.

While Raja needs to keep his Ferrari going, Himesh now seriously has to get his autorickshaw’s silencer cleaned. And you, Raja Fans, have to keep voting.

    You gave us an oasis to get together and all the info, your writing and videos. I can never thank you enough.

    If you see the ‘chak de phatte’ video, catch Vishal’s stunned mouth agape look. He adopted in a manner of speaking, this adorable kid with the never say die spirit. He knew ‘then’ what Raja could do and it culminated in Sat. show.
    I could sense and was worried about the communication gap - Vishal thinks in English and when he speaks in Hindi - he at times cant reach raja. the idioms don’t quite gel. Raja thinks n feels in Hindi.

    Back to back, repeat of fri-sat show on Zee right now in India.

    Don’t be influenced by AA fans. They are just die-hard AA fans so now that Raja was superb they are making stories. Raja did n’t gulp words or anything. Before the once more he is perfect which is important. It was only in the second time after the once more and at that point everybody esle (Raja’s wannabes included) was singing along with him that he didn’t finish a one or two sentences. Remember it has been only Raja who raises the bar. I mean ,don’t you think only Raja’s performances made everyone that it was very close to final? So what Raja did was appropriate. He just needs lots of votes b/c Amanat fans are falsely blaming that Indians don’t vote him so are compelling more people to vote for him even if they don’t like Amanat’s singing.     It allows you to grab any video off Youtube by just copy-pasting the address of the video into the downloader. It also converts the vids to AVI format. I use it to get all of Raja’s vids. :) Hope you find it useful!
