Poonam - you deserve to go further

If there was one other singer this Saregamapa season, who I would love to listen to apart from Raja Hasan, that was Poonam.

I really don’t care much for struggle stories that Zee built around her. I really don’t care about the sympathy votes, people accused her of. For me, she was a pure singing talent - who should have been competing with Raja in the finals. Perhaps, she lacked the charisma of Raja, but when it came to sur and taal, she was an extremely serious competitor.

It was disappointing to see Zee making the background ready for her elimination since last week. The mentors already had made up their mind to push Amanat ahead instead of Poonam. The “weak performance” rant had been doing rounds for a few days, so that Zee could justify her elimination. And we lost out on a deserving finalist.

If Raja Hasan, doled out the majestic “Maa Tujhe Salaam“, Poonam was equally elegant the same night singing the extremely difficult composition “Vande Mataram“. Poonam always had the command over singing and a soulful voice - but where she lacked was one x-factor that could translate into mass appeal.

N. Murali Mohan, who writes for this blog often had mentioned in a previous post that - Raja’s only competition in Saregamapa was Poonam. In his opinion, Poonam’s command over sur and taal was better than that of Raja.

A Raja vs. Poonam final would have been such a wonderful moment.

I don’t know if Poonam will make it big in the Indian music industry. Will her mentor who backed her all the while, and backed out the last minute help her get a foothold? Only time will tell.

We all know the Poonam struggle story. She got the attention of the people who mattered. And it’s time for her to go out and make the most out of it. Poonam, forget the past, forget the competition - your real struggle begins now.

Update: : This is what this is what Vishal told Megan in response to Poonam not getting any offers despite being the best female singer:

“You’re right, Megan, but in Poonam’s case, we’ll have to wait till the right song comes along. She’s a great singer, though, and while we didn’t make her any public promises, I assure you we will back her up, make her meet the right people, and as and when we get the chance, have her sing for us too. Cheers-Vishal.

  1. RHB,
The reason I don’t comment at this site often is that I think and feel the same about Raja and the show, well almost 99% as you.
So here’s a blanket - ‘my thoughts exactly’ from me.

  11. Truly Poonam deserved to be in the finals with Raja. Both her performance were better than Aneek and Amanat. I don’t know why but I got the feelig that everyone knew she was going out. Even Poonam herself. I hope that Vishalji and Shekharji help her in anyway they can. My heart goes out to Poonam. She is an example to everyone who wants to reach the stars, I know she will make it with or without anyone’s help because of her strength and determination.

    Good Luck Poonam.
