The SaReGaMaPa Popularity - YouTube Index!
Manish is back - and this week he has a strangely devised ranking to figure out which performance has been the best on Saregamapa this season.
Now, let’s get a few facts cleared first. This is a popularity rating of various performances on Saregamapa. A popularity rating does not necessarily translate into votes. And neither does it indicate singing ability. It simply translates into, well, popularity.
And how have I calculated it? Simple - judging things by the number of times a song has been viewed on YouTube. And it’s called the Saregamapa YouTube Index!
This is not an entirely scientific process - no theories of psephology or market research put in - so just cool down if your favourite performance isn’t on the list. It simply means your choice is very different from thousands on the web. And this entirely represents only people online - which is a far miniscule number compared to the millions who watch and vote every week. And a fair percentage of YouTube viewers are from outside India - simple reasons why these results and voting results do not match.
So let’s get on with the numbers. First let’s look at things by Number of video views on YouTube.com
Ranking based on Number of YouTube Views

- Maiyya Maiyya outscores everybody by several miles. With over 250,000 views, it even outscores videos of Vinit, Hemchandra and Debojit who have been available for months on the web. If I am not wrong, Mauli Dave’s this performance is most viewed Indian video ever - in the history of Youtube. Mauli, you rock. And I am expecting hate mail here.
- Mauli again continues to rock. Her Rasiya Man Basiya performance (#2) has a staggering 64K views. Remember, both these videos have been available for a while on the net. So they continue to gain views over a period of time. But if you look at the trend, her later performances have gone downhill after the stunning debut of Maiyya Maiyya.
- Raja Hasan’s initial performance - Allah ke Bande (#3) has 48000 takers to date. Looking across the board, Raja Hasan has 7 instances in the top fifteen - something that marks consistency in performance all the way through. His Mahiya performance, an unheared song has 42000 views and is in the 4th position.
- Amanat, suprisingly has disappointed with this index. He appears twice - with Mitwaa getting 40k views. But nowhere popular as we expected him too.
- Aneek Dhar too didn’t find much views on YouTube. Just one performance of his - Karle Pyar (Pyaar ke side effects) managed to creep in at #7 with 38K views.
- The biggest surprise was the exclusion of Junaid (No. 1 in international voting?), Mussarat (The performance of the season?), Poonam and Sumedha, who barely managed to crossed 10,000 views in any of their videos.
Ranking based on Views per day
But a major drawback of the above is that performance videos posted earler continue to get more views. So a video posted in June would have an extra advantage over a video posted in say Mid-August. So I decided to add in another simple factor. Let’s look at the average views per day of a video. This should be a far better indicator of the performance. The calculation was simple. It was the number of views divided by the number of days the video has been in existance. The minimum qualification was 10,000 views for a performance video.

- Maiyya Maiyya yet again! It has been this season’s (and all Saregamapa seasons’) overwhelming hit with an amazing 2475 views per day. Mauli fans can celebrate. While Mauli bashers, please stay away from sending me your opinion. I know them anyway.
- Raja Hasan rocks yet again. He has eight appearances in the top 15. The recent Maa Tujhe Salaam is a surprise at #2 - with 11,000 views in just six days. His strong performances like Mahiya, Teri Deewani and Allah ke Bande occupy the middle slot - yet another reminder of his consistency.
- Mussarat’s Saawre, which was billed as the performance of the season, thankfully appears at #10.
- Yet again, there were no great performance views from Junaid, Harpreet, Poonam or Sumedha which is a bit surprising.
Just a reminder again: This is not a scientific research. Errors could be many because of multiple videos of the same performance being posted and those with very few views have been ignored. Also there are more video posting services other than YouTube. So, have fun, and take it easy.
Update: A friend in our forums reminds us that the most watched YouTube Video is “Indian Thriller” featuring Chiranjeevi as a me-too-Michael Jackson. Search for it on YT. If Mauli rocks, Chiranjeevi rocks so many times that you could build a Nek Chand Garden with it. Do let me know if you find more popular videos.
Update 1: Bobby, a reader here has put in a lot of efforts to calculate Raja Hasan’s YouTube views. So, Raja Hasan at this point of time has close to six lakh views on YouTube! Thanks Bobby!

thanks - but as you said this is not accurate indication since lot more people in INDIA do not have reliable broadband connections to watch clips on you tube …..
i wonder what is the count for videos watched on this site ??
good that you put a disclaimer at the bottom.
i just searched “mauli dave” on youtube and got 54 results.
I also searched “raja hasan” and got 100(exactly 100) results. Almost twice of mauli’s videos.
so apparently, there are multiple videos of raja’s same performance. To make it fair, multiply raja’s youtube views by 2. There you have it now. However, Mauli’s “Maiyya Maiyya” is still #1. There are a few reasons for that too. First, It was Mauli’s first performance, so the video is pretty old. Secondly, the performance is often referred to on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. It is also the best performance of Mauli to date. So it makes sense. Good job Manish for the statistics. Im not criticizing the post. Its an interesting statistic. kool.
Anyways, we should focus on raja here. I just voted for him ~200 times, so that Aneek doesnt overtake him next week. Raja rocks!
Someguy, your arguments are appreciated. Wish I had more time and resources to do this study better. Calculating multiple videos was a big pain. So I just stuck to where I could find large number of views.
But the point is, this study, or whatever you might call it - brings out a few points. Mauli has her fans, though they might be diminishing. It isn’t just her family and friends voting as the forums have decided on. (Remember, videos are meant to be seen first and heared later).
And Raja - who has a following across the globe - has consistently performed well. It is not just the infamous Bikaner voting practice.
It also brings out the point that the likes of Amanat, Mussarat, Aneek and Poonam, who are talked so much about in the forums, struggle to put across performance that gets noticed.
I have always believed that public voting is about perception of the audience, instead of singing abilities. And that is where Raja has succeeded - by relating to the audience.
Dear Raja wow you got highest vote again ! nice work raja just fantastic singer you willreach in you goal
In response to the person who has posted this you tube index thinking that it’s a true measure of popularity of especially people from overseas.
I have few arguments:
1st- I reside in Australia; I have access to ZEE TV plus internet. I would never waste my time listening or watching Mauli. I watch Saregamapa episodes on the internet as the episode is actually telecasted 2 days later. And watch it on TV after two days as well.
2nd-I used to watch Raja’s songs on you tube until I discovered this wonderfully dedicated site for Raja Hasan.
3rd-Youtube Index, in my eyes, is a good measure for the contestants who don’t have such great Websites which are solely devoted towards their singing talent.
So yeah Mauli Dave might be watched more on you tube because there are no other resources available. And also just a reminder this site is meant for Raja, please don’t waste our time by posting such unjustified measures.
Raja Hasan does not need any rating or you tube index to determine his divine talent.
Cheers to Raja’s flawless and effortless singing!!
I think almost all the videos on this site have been taken from youtube and i also think that when a person watches the video on this site, it is counted by youtube as a view.
i think Raja is allready a Big Red signal for (sonu nigam) specially , no dought about that and one more thing i would like to say on this site there will be new trend starts in bollywood by the voice of Raja
